Babylon born Ed Van Buren, at 79 Babylon born and raised Edgar "Ed" A. Van Buren, a respected Grumman Aerospace supervisor, died Feb. 22, 2008 at Eastern Long Island Hospital of congestive heart failure. He was 79 years old. Born on Jan. 7, 1929 in Babylon, he graduated Babylon High School in 1947. He served with the U.S. Air Force stationed at McDill Base in Tampa, Florida and returned to live in Smithtown. For 42 years, he worked for Grumman at Bethpage and Calverton until he retired. During his 32 years in Smithtown, he was Captain of Fire Department, Co. 4 and was Vestryman and Treasurer of St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church. He retired to Cutchogue in 1989 where he was a member of their historical society and library for many years. Mr. Van Buren was born into a family of baymen and loved to fish and spend time of his boat. He was an avid gardener and nature photographer who also liked to do major home construction projects. He leaves behind his daughters: Diana of New York City and Greenport and Mary of Ft. Collins, Colorado; his grandchildren: Maria and Michael Van Buren-Stevis; his companion: Janet Healy; his sister: Dolores Latsch of West Islip; and his former wife: Donya. Funeral Services were held at the Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport with the Rev. Canon Paul F. Wancura officiating. Interment with Military Honors followed at the Calverton National Cemetery.
