Harvard Club recognizes local teachers
One of only a dozen teachers to receive this award- from across the 120-plus school districts on Long Island- Kreyling will receive his award at the Harvard Club's University Relations Lunch on April 26. Following the award ceremony, a Harvard professor known for superb lecturing ability and intellectual insight will deliver the annual University Relations Lecture. "The Harvard Club is proud to recognize teachers who transform lives," said Dr. Judith Esterquest, a board member of the Long Island Club. "These teachers are extraordinary professionals, preparing our children for challenges that were unimaginable even a few decades ago. Expending countless hours and extraordinary energy, year after year, they shape our country's future - and they do so one student at a time." Kreyling, who has been a teacher for 18 years, the last five at Roslyn High School, currently teaches Advanced Placement Biology, Honors Biology for freshmen and sophomores and the Natural Science Research Seminar. He has previously taught Marine Biology, Regents Living Environment, Ninth Grade Science and Forensic Science. Before becoming a teacher, he worked in retail sales and was a licensed stockbroker for a Long Island brokerage firm. A popular teacher of demanding subjects, he wrote over 200 college recommendations for current and former students just last year. Of the hundreds of recommendations he has written over the years, fewer than 10 percent have been for students applying to Harvard College. When not preparing lesson plans, writing recommendations, grading and guiding student work, he enjoys spending time with his family, designing and caring for bonsai, reading, drawing and painting, and outdoor activities. Albert Li, currently a junior at Harvard College who is majoring in biology, nominated Kreyling for this award. Having Mr . Kreyling's "enthusiasm in presenting his material as a major factor in my desire to pursue biology at Harvard." As the former student puts it, Mr. Kreyling was not simply entertaining, "From day one, we saw that Mr. Kreyling was serious and dedicated to making sure we did as well as we could on the exam. "His lectures were jammed not only with information but also with his distinctive sense of humor and enthusiasm," Li said, and that helped "equip a bunch of nervous sophomores with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to face the dreaded AP." Kevin Scanlon, Principal of Roslyn High School, learned of this award, he immediately offered his congratulations, noting that "Vinny Kreyling is a remarkably dedicated professional." Scanlon describes Kreyling as devoting "an extraordinary amount of time to his students. He is always one of the first teachers to arrive and one of the last to leave."
