North Babylon Girls Win Suffolk County Overall Title
The girls combined for 46 in their teams 54-34 win over Hampton Bays in the overall Suffolk County championship game at Stony Brook University on Sunday, March 2. "We're fortunate to have them," said Lady Bulldogs' head coach Mike Petre, whose team won the Suffolk County overall title last year as well. "They're very difficult to defend against. When you have scorers like that it unleashes your defense more because you have less pressure." Both girls are two of the toughest and skilled guards in Suffolk County and demoralize a defense with their constant shot dominance and ability to break any type of pressure. "Those girls are unbelievable," Hampton Bays head coach Dave Goodman said. "I knew what we were getting into today, but we still had to strap in and go for it. In the second half, the Lady Baymen (20-4) looked tired and worn down from a tough Suffolk County tournament in which they won the Class B, Suffolk County B/C/D and Suffolk County small school title all in the last week and a half. "We're 17 year old girls and we get tired too," said Kelly Cavallo, who led Hampton Bays with 14 points in the game. "We hung in there but we just couldn't get it done. We got tired. This game doesn't really mean anything. It's just a bonus game on the season." Petre knows how hard his team can grind their opponents down. "That seems to be the formula all year," Petre said. "I hope it keeps working. We stay after you. We might not get the steals all the time, but eventually we get some turnovers. Fatigue usually plays a role of us doing better in the second half than we do in the first. You can't win unless you have some toughness." Cavallo had 14 points in the first half, but North Babylon (19-5), who is on a winning wave of its own, defeating Sachem East in the Class AA title game two days earlier, was clearly going to be physical, quick and hard to get around from the get go. McPherson had 19 points in the first half, 12 of which came from her four three point shots. She was left open and her teammates did a solid job of finding her for the open shot. With the loss of Suffolk's best player last season, Chanel Chisholm, who is playing at Vanderbilt University now, Petre didn't know how his team would fair this season.
"I knew we'd be competitive," he said. "To win back-to-back AA titles and Suffolk overall titles is an incredible accomplishment for the entire program, the community, the school and the team. I'm extremely proud of the girls the way they worked."
