Heard It On The Grapevine ARE YOU A "NOTCH" BABY? The answer is "yes" if you were born between 1917 and 1928. This means that you are receiving an average of $1,300 less a year in your Social Security payments. Right now legislation is before the Congress to fix this problem. Just do the arithmetic. Many are war veterans, members of "the greatest generation," and will not live to collect the money that they so richly deserve. They need help now. Call your Congressman, Peter King, at 516-541-4225. Do it today. IT SEEMS LIKE ONLY YESTERDAY that the West Babylon Library opened its doors, but can you believe that they're making plans to celebrate their 25th anniversary (silver). Plans have been in the works all year long and special events have been booked in every department,. Outside of the ordinary programs. Talked to the executive director Ann Marie Dolan who advises residents to check their bulletins and attend some of the events and be sure to attend the big celebration party on April 18. A large crowd is expected. The library has been a wonderful asset to the community. We all appreciate the many services provided, the large selection of books, tapes, music, etc., but most of all, the excellent library staff members who are so helpful and knowledgeable. Thanks so much to all, ENJOYING INTERNSHIP IN NEW ZEALAND. Orrie Jones, who is the son of Elaine and Orrie Jones of Guilford, Connecticut and a student at the University of New Hampshire, is spending a year in New Zealand as an intern operating the center of field shredders in Ecology Resource and management in Environmental Policy of New Zealand. Orrie will be traveling the north and south islands before returning to his Connecticut home. He's the grandson of Peg Rendich of Babylon Village. THIS JUST IN. Just heard, hot off the presses, the very good news that Claire Meirowitz has accepted the position as president of the Babylon Business and Professional Women's Association. Claire has been working with the organization for a number of years, is very knowledgeable and high respected by all. We'll have lots more next week. AND SPEAKING OF THE "BUSY WOMEN" - so many of our community leaders were at the recent cocktail party held at the home of Mrs. Anita North, and we forgot one of the best - our executive director of the Babylon Library, Marina Sullivan. Marina is a wonderful resource in our community and does a great job for our library. D.C. BOUND. Ray Zaccarro, who has been the executive director of the Babylon Council on the Arts will be leaving his post here, and will take over as communications director for Representative Carolyn McCarthy (D, N.Y. ) Rep. McCarthy is the senior member for the Committee on Education and Labor. All the best in your new job Ray. BaCCA will miss you. A VERY IMPORTANT MISSION Rebecca Griffix the daughter of Sally Beyers Atakins is working on a very important project which would incorporate an exchange program to bring doctors from Mozambique to the U.S. and U.S. Doctors to Mozambique. She has been meeting with civic leaders to make arrangements. Rebecca is the granddaughter of Dr. Milton ("Mittie") and "Mac" Beyers of West Islip. SEND GET WELL WISHES to Rita Bellone, the mother of our Supervisor Steve Bellone, who is sporting a brand new hip. Rita is doing very well, and her many friends wish her a very speedy recovery.
SOUTHWARD HO LIVES UP TO ITS REPUTATION. When the "Busy Women" held their luncheon meeting there last week, everyone raved about the food and the service. Mayor Ralph Scordino spoke on the progress of a number of projects in the Village, and very important to most of us, a family drugstore will be opening in the Village. And they will deliver. Stay tuned.
