Copiague School Board taps Deputy Superintendent for top post
by Carolyn James

The Copiague Board of Education unanimously voted to appoint Deputy Superintendent Charles A. Leunig to the position of Superintendent of Schools effective July 1, 2008. The motion was made at the Feb. 11 school board meeting and follows the announcement two weeks earlier of the retirement of Superintendent Dr. Bill Bolton.

"Mr. Leunig has demonstrated that he has the skills and commitment to lead the Copiague School District to the next level of success," said Board of Education President Brian J. Sales. "The fact that he has been working closely with Dr. Bolton for many years further ensures the transition will be seamless as we begin the 2008- 2009 school year. We congratulate Mr. Leunig and look forward to a long and productive relationship."

"This is a great opportunity and I know that I have very large shoes to fill," said Leunig.

The district has been working to ensure a smooth transition over the past ten months, aware that Bolton was preparing to retire. As the next few months unfold, Leunig said he expects to work even closer with Bolton. "Bill has no intention of slowing down and is still here carrying out his role, but at the same time we are both cognizant of the fact that there is a transition taking place and it is going to be interesting," said Leunig.

One major process underway is the annual budget preparation. Both men have been working with other school officials crunching the numbers, looking at staffing patterns and "trying to figure out how the new contract for excellence is going to impact on this year's budget," said Leunig. "Every year is a new year but in the end we come up with a solid budget and this year will be no different," he said.

Leunig, a native resident of Long Island, began his career teaching in the Suffield, Connecticut schools. He also served as a teacher and administrator in the Uniondale Public Schools. He joined the Copiague School District in 1994, serving first as the Director of Personnel until 2002 when he was promoted to Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Administrative Services. In 2006 Mr. Leunig was appointed to the position of Deputy Superintendent.

He holds a bachelor's degree in education from SUNY-Oswego, a master's degree in education from CUNY-City College of New York, and a specialist diploma in educational administration and supervision from CUNY-Queens College.

In addition to his work in the Copiague School District, Leunig serves as Director Emeritus of the Long Island Association of School Personnel Administrators, having served previously as both director and president. He has also served on the Executive Board of the New York State Association of School Personnel Administrators, most recently as president.

Leunig currently resides with his wife, Elizabeth, and their four sons in Wading River, where he has been active in the Boy Scouts of America.
