Ascension Lutheran Church to honor retiring pastor

The Rev. Dennis O'Rourke, pastor of Ascension Lutheran Church, 33 Bay Shore Rd., Deer Park, has announced his retirement and will preach his last sermon at the church on Sat., March 29 at the 6 p.m. service and on Sun. March 30 at 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. The congregation has been blessed to have the O'Rourke family at Ascension for 15 years. His previous assignments have been at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Kingston; St. Michael's, Amagansett; St. David's Massapequa Park and Gloria Dei, Huntington Station. Pastor O'Rourke has seen Ascension through the beginning of a ministry to the Latino community. He was instrumental in the hiring of Pastor Napoleon Plaza with assistance from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Amreica., Metro New York Synod, to begin the ministry at Ascension, which now includes Misa en Espanol every Sunday at 10:45 a.m. and ESL classes during the week. Pastor O'Rourke has also been the guiding presence during the refurbishment of the interior of the sanctuary as well as the outside work which will be completed when the weather improves. The congregation will honor Pastor and Mrs. O'Rourke at a retirement banquet on Friday, April 4 at the Sheraton Long Island Hotel.
