On Thursday, March 20, at approximately 4:40 p.m., a man was selling
sneakers from his 1997 Ford Explorer at the end of Chestnut Rd., North
Amityville when he was confronted by five unknown men. At least one of the
men was armed with a handgun. The men took cell phones, around fifty pairs
of sneakers and a large amount of cash from the victim, identified later as
Pedro Gonzalez, 53, of 3 South Bay Ave., Amityville.
The men then fled on foot along a path to an adjacent street. Gonzalez
drove his vehicle around the block and saw the men loading his merchandise
into a 1999 Nissan sedan. He chased the men in his Ford and subsequently
struck the Nissan, driven by one of the robbers. The other four robbers
fled on foot. The impact caused the Nissan to crash into a 1995 Lincoln
sedan, driven by Robert Hones, 63, of 1039 Nugent Ave., Bay Shore, who was
driving northbound on New Highway. Hones suffered minor injuries from the
crash. The driver of the Nissan fled on foot from the scene.
The Nissan is owned by Daniel Maslivar, 18, of 21 Cedar Road,
Amityville, who says he was with his accountant on Cedar Road when his car
was stolen prior to the robbery.
The sneakers have been recovered, however the cell phones and cash have
not.
