Babylon students get lesson in careers

Recognizing that choosing a career path is something that takes years to decide, Babylon Junior- Senior High School in the Babylon Village School District recently hosted a Career Day program for students in grades seven and eight. The program is also provided as a continuation of the career portfolio the students are asked to create prior to moving up from Babylon Memorial Grade School.

Throughout the morning event, students attended two workshops during which they had the chance to meet with professionals from nearly 20 different fields. The presenters, many of whom were local business owners or worked in the surrounding area, each spoke with the students about the education needed for their job, the types of things they experience at work, and welcomed questions about their field. Additionally, the students also attended a character education assembly program by educational consultant and actor Paul Failla, at which a variety of pressing issues faced by today's youth were discussed.

"Students need to be exposed to various careers in their middle years so that they learn about the great variety of career opportunities available to them," stated Director of School Counseling Barbara Restivo. "This program enables them to learn about a variety of different careers in order to help them to make an informed decision about which path they want to take in life." Some of the careers the students had a chance to learn about included healthcare, art, law, advertising, business, and acting. Board of Education President and law professional Darrell J. Conway encouraged the students to "find a career and job that you enjoy doing. Working in a field you enjoy will enable you to do your job better and will prove to be rewarding."

Shown in the photo below during Babylon Junior Senior High School's Career Day, the school's seventh and eighth-grade students enjoyed speaking with School Resource Officer and local Police Officer Jeanne Osias about her career.
