Beth Shalom's Rabbi Martin Merin, at 72
by Tiffany Elliott

Martin Merin, who served as Rabbi of the Congregation Beth Shalom in Babylon for the last 14 years, died Jan. 29, 2008 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The 72-year-old leaves behind a legacy of compassion and committment.

"He was such a charitable man," said the synagogue president Paul Lurie, who had known him for more than a dozen years."If anyone in need ever came to him, he wouldn't let them leave without help, even if it meant giving them money from his own pocket."

Born in the Bronx, he graduated from the City College of New York, the Talmudic Academy and Chovitz Chaim. He served five different congregations during his 51 years of service: Shaarey Tefliah in Glen Falls, Temple Shalom in Bridgewater, Temple Beth El in Oakhurst, Temple Beth Shalom in Ramsey, and most currently at Congregation Beth Shalom in Babylon.

In addition to his 25 years as a pastoral counselor at Carrier Clinic in Bell Mead, Rabbi Merin received many awards as a supporter of Israel and other Jewish causes.

According to his family, he was an avid Yankees baseball fan who liked to dabble in home improvement and construction projects.

Rabbi Merin leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Gerry; his children: Dr. Lon and Suzy of Goshen, New York and Beth of Manhattan. His granddaughters, Julie and Sydney of Goshen, New York; his sister, Betty Kahn; his mother in law, Ann Goldberg; and several nephews and nieces also survive him.

Services were held at Congregation Beth Shalom, Babylon, on Jan. 31, 2008. Services were under the care of Sinai Chapels in Fresh Meadows, New York.

Donations in Rabbi Merin's name can be sent to the Congregation Beth Shalom, 441 Deer Park Ave., Babylon, New York 11702.
