West Islip senior ranked as one of the world's top students

Thomas Jefferson's firm belief was that individual talent and initiative must be chief qualifications for leadership. He envisioned the University of Virginia as a training ground for those who would take on the burdens of responsibility in a free society.

Today, the foundation's fundamental mission is to identify, attract, and nurture individuals of extraordinary intellectual range and depth who possess the highest qualities of leadership, scholarship, and citizenship. Those with great promise are sought, selected, and given sufficient financial support so they are free to develop their talents.

Forty of the 100 finalists will receive full scholarships to the University of Virginia. Meredith is the first West Islip High School student to be a Jefferson Scholar finalist in more than a decade. She is ranked fourth in the Class of 2008 and has already been accepted by Notre Dame, Georgetown, Boston, and the University of North Carolina. She's shown with Principal Ken Hartill.
