People in the News
Only 16 scholars from the United States are chosen each year to participate in the seminar. The seminar topic for 2008-09 is Science and Society: The Impact of Science on Policy Formation. The program will begin in Berlin and include visits to other cities in Germany. The program will focus on the formation of policies at the core of modern society such as climate change, food technology, gene technology, stem cell research and the broad scope of education. The seminar runs for two weeks, June 7 to 21 starting in Berlin, Germany and ending in Brussels Belgium, the capital of the European Union. Dr. Gaab's expertise in German culture and his- tory is well known. He participated in the German Academic Exchange Fellowship and received a grant from the Agency for International Development as well as a Farmingdale Foundation Award. His books include Justice Delayed: The Restoration of Justice in Bavaria under American Occupation, 1945 1949 (1999); and Munich: Hofbräuhaus and History; Beer, Culture, and Politics (2006) both published by Peter Lang Publishing, New York. Of particular interest is that in April 2000, Dr. Gaab was asked to translate a German autobiography titled Memories. His expert translation was quoted in an article written by Newsday reporter Steve Wick titled, A Grandson's Search for Answers: Billy Joel's Journey into his grandfather's past - a complex story of love, loyalty and injustice during the Holocaust.
Gaab received a BA from Hofstra University, and MA and PhD from Stony Brook University.
