Jack DeGarmo, 81 proud Babylonian
by Tiffany Elliott

Former Babylon Village and Oak Island resident John F. "Jack" DeGarmo, a local businessman who loved his community, died surrounded by his family on Feb. 14, 2008. He was 81, and had lived in Fort Pierce, Florida since his retirement in 1994.

Born Dec. 1, 1926, he was a 1944 Babylon High School graduate. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and for many years was an operator of the Inter County Bus Company based on Deer Park Avenue in Babylon.

He lived on Paumanake Avenue in Babylon Village for most of his life, and spent many wonderful summers at his beach home on Oak Island. Later, as the owner of Setauket Travel, he was able to indulge in his wander-lust and travel the globe.

Mr. DeGarmo was a longtime, active community member of the Babylon Lions Club, the Babylon Historical Society, the American Legion Post #94 and Babylon Lodge #0793 of the Free and Accepted Masons and the Great South Bay Isles Association, of which he was president for two terms.

"He was just a really nice guy who loved the water," said John Horan, of the American Legion Post #94 who knew Jack for about 40 years. "We'll miss him."

He leaves behind his wife of almost 55 years, Rose Marie "Ronnie" (nee Autuoria); his children: John L. and his wife Cathy of West Islip, Susan of Baltimore, Maryland, Cathy and her partner Diane of Utica, New York and Richard and his wife Denise of Oak Lawn, Illinois; his grandchildren: Rae Anne, Peter, Caitlyn, David, Kerri, Phillip and Saraphina; his sister, Jean Hocter of Babylon; his niece Jane and her husband Jay as well as other family members and friends.

A private ceremony was held at the Haisley Funeral Home in Florida. A celebration of his life will be held in West Islip at a later date and time.

A donation in his name can be sent to Treasure Coast Hospices, 1202 SE Indian Street, Stuart, Florida 34997. Condolences for the family can be left at www.HaisleyFuneralHome.com.
