Police make arrests in Suffolk for graffiti; break up organized group

Seven members of an organized graffiti group, who are responsible for more than 50 counts of making graffiti throughout Suffolk County over the course of the past month, have been arrests by police.

The Third Precinct Crime Section conducted an investigation into the graffiti group WDS, which stands for "We Destroy Streets," and DTB, which stands for "Down to Bomb." This investigation was in response to an increase in graffiti in Bay Shore, Brentwood, East Islip, and Deer Park. The First Precinct Crime Section Unit conducted a similar investigation in Deer Park. Both units contributed to each others investigations.

Among the locations vandalized were the Brentwood American Legion, overpasses on Sunrise Highway and the Southern State, the American Veterans Association in Bay Shore, the El Salvadorian Consulate in Brentwood, the Brentwood Memorial Cemetery and numerous other businesses and residences.

The First and Third Precinct Crime Sections are still actively investigating other incidents of graffiti in these areas. This quality of life issue is a priority in Suffolk County due to the negative impact it has on the local communities. These subjects were arrested and charged with Making Graffiti, a class A misdemeanor and released on bail. They will be arraigned at First District Court at later dates. The seventh arrest was a juvenile.

Charged in these incidents and charged with making graffiti were Enio Solares, 25, of 1146 Connetquot Ave., Central Islip, who was charged with one count making graffiti; Jhoel Mercado, 18, of 16 Duke St., Deer Park, who charged with four counts; Stephen Commisso, 17, of 125 Rigney St., Brentwood, charged with four counts; Luis Alamo, 18, of 11 Santam Court, Bay Shore, charged with 14; Brandon Guzman, 17, of 120 Evergreen St., Brentwood, charged with 17, and Roger M. Vargas,18, of 188 Louise Dr., Bay Shore, charged with 15 counts.

Third Precinct Crime Section Officers John Oakley and Theodore Martinez and First Precinct Crime Section Officer Nicholas Tobia contributed to the investigation.

Anyone with any information on graffiti in the area is encouraged to contact the First Precinct Crime Section at (631)854-8127 or Crime Stoppers at 1- 800-220-TIPS.
