WI Chamber to host meeting Mar. 13 on fate of LaGrange Inn
The property's owner, Rick Olivieri, said he has had informal discussions with the Town of Islip, but that no formal plans or final decisions for development have been made. Gene Murphy, Commissioner of Planning and Development confirmed that the owner/developer have met with the Town, and that "concepts were discussed for two buildings, one for offices in the historic portion on the southern part of the property, and the other for a pharmacy. "Those were not recent discussions, however, and we have not heard anything from the owner lately but the Town has established some criteria for the site." Specifically, the Town wants to see the historic portion of the building saved. That would include the part of the building that is now the lobby for the restaurant and a small portion beyond that. "Most of the building is not historic," noted Murphy. In addition, the Town wants the developer to address traffic issues, particularly since the site is at a heavily trafficked intersection, and a substantial buffer for the residential community to the north. "We are not looking to have parking all around the site, and that is the direction that we have given the people who have spoken to us about it," he said. Once formal plans are filed, if they are filed, the Town will set a public hearing since the changes would require a rezoning, said Murphy. "We share the concerns of the community on the issues of traffic, setting and historic preservation, and how much development the property can reasonably take," said Murphy.
The event begins at 7 p.m. Interested residents of both West Islip and Babylon can attend.
