United States Power Squadron offering safe boating courses The Adult and Young Boaters Public Safe Boating Course will be offered weekly this spring at the East Islip Middle School cafeteria, 100 Redman St., Islip Terrace beginning, Wednesday, March 5, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. by the United States Power Squadron - America's Boating Club. Pre-registration for the first 60 students will be online at www.gsbps.org and link to GSB Public Course Schedule. In-person registration will take place on the first night of the course, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Adult and Young Boaters (from 10 years old and up) Safe Boating Course will meet on the following dates: March 5, 12, 19 and 26 and will cover the following topics: You are the Skipper - what would you do?, Boat Terms and Types, Aids to Navigation, Boat Handling, Navigational Rules, Adverse Conditions and Emergencies, US and New York State Regulations, boat trailering and personal water craft. The final exam will then be taken on April 2. Optional Charting and Piloting classes will be held on April 9 and 16 and will include: Navigational Charts; plotting a course and the mariner's compass; calculating distance, speed and time and determining a position. Successful completion of this course provides New York State Certification for personal water craft Operation. The course is free, but there is a nominal fee of $60 for the Boating Book and plotting instruments.
