Stern hosts forum on unclaimed funds
S.C. Leg. Steve Stern (D-Huntington) 16th LD, Chairman of the Veterans and Seniors Committee, recently held an unclaimed funds forum with Michael Caplice, the Long Island regional representative from the office of New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli at his District office to assist residents in locating and claiming some of the more than eight billion dollars in unclaimed funds that are located in bank accounts, stocks and bonds, utility deposits and insurance funds. "We want to return unclaimed funds to their rightful owners," DiNapoli said. "The money belongs to New Yorkers. We want to give it back." The number of unclaimed funds for Legislator Stern's district are: Dix Hills: 4323, Elwood: 30, Centerport: 1119, Deer Park4539, East Northport: 2683, Greenlawn: 1482, North Babylon: 2334 and Huntington: 11,418.
Caplice provided claims forms to more than 20 constituents who are among the 22 million people owed money. Additionally an on-line search of Legislator Stern's own street uncovered eight residents with unclaimed funds. " I welcome the efforts of the Comptroller's office and Mr. Caplice to work with area residents to recover funds that are rightfully theirs," Legislator Stern said. "I am pleased that residents were able to reclaim funds to which they are entitled." Anyone who thinks they may have unclaimed funds who was unable to attend the forum may also check for unclaimed funds on-line at www.osc.state.ny.us/ouf/index.htm or by calling toll-free at 1-800-221-9311.
