Bay Shore's Unitarian Universalist Fellowship launches women's memoir writing workshop

Bay Shore's Unitarian Universalist Fellowship's Social Justice Committee has donated seed money to launch a new community writing workshop, bringing together women from all walks of life, including those recently released from prison. Facilitated by Herstory Writers Workshop, the free series will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of South Suffolk, 28 Brentwood Rd., Bay Shore. The workshop will meet for six weeks on Thursday evenings, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., commencing February 21. The theme is Building Bridges Through Our Tales.

Herstory's workshops take place in more than a dozen sites where the making of art, healing and community building are combined. Begun in the painfully segregated neighborhoods of suburban Long Island, Herstory's work has earned the support of human rights educators and healers alike.

Since its founding 12 years ago, Herstory has touched the lives of over 1,500 women - incarcerated and free - who have partaken in this unique approach to writing for the "Stranger/ Reader" that allows all women to participate on level ground, regardless of their educational background or previous writing experience.

In small meeting rooms all over Long Island, the politician learns about the "once upon a time" prison inmate, developing a community rich in healing and empowerment, extending into many areas of their lives, transcending the barriers of race, culture, educational and economic differences that so often prevent us from hearing one another.

Herstory facilitator Lonnie Mathis has received considerable recognition for bringing Herstory's work to women in prison and for her co-editing of Voices: Memoir of Herstory Inside Suffolk County's Correctional Facilities.
