Einar Grell: world class fisherman from Babylon Village
by Tiffany Elliott

Master saltwater fisherman and captain Einar "Doc" Grell loved the ocean and spent as much time as he could near it. He told his family he moved to Long Island to be near the water and spent much of his time on Fire Island and in the Great South Bay. The 28-year Babylon Village resident died Jan. 17, 2008 after a longterm illness. He was 81 years old.

"He was a wonderful person who lived a great life," said his wife of 23 years, Barbara. "He loved to teach his grandchildren how to fish and spend time with them on his boat. I'll really miss him."

He was born June 22, 1926 in Concord, New Hampshire to Beatrice (Bennett) and Einar Grell, and was a star baseball pitcher in his youth. During World War II, he served as a pharmacist mate on a submarine and after graduating from Dartmouth College, taught science at the Half Hollow Hills School District for 35 years. As the Director of Science for the School District, Dr. Grell was able to conduct research at the Waldemar Cancer Lab in Port Washington. He also studied pollution in his beloved Great South Bay, and the affects of pollution on coral structures in the Caribbean.

He holds five world records in fishing with the international Game Fishing Association, and has written many articles for the Long Island Fisherman. Some of his mounted fish can be seen at the International Fishing Hall of Fame in Florida. He was a longtime member of the Babylon Tuna Club and ran his charter boats, the Barracuda and the Moby Dick out of Montauk and Babylon. Dr. Grell was also named New York State Senior Men's Champion in the game of horseshoes.

In addition to his wife, he also leaves behind his his children: Mary, Christopher, Diana, Thomas and Peter; his stepsons: Christopher, Gordon and Gregory; and his thirteen beloved grandchildren.

Dr. Grell reposed at the Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons West Islip Funeral Home on Jan. 20 and 21, 2008. A Celebration of the Liturgy of Christian Burial was said at St. Joseph's R.C. Church, Babylon on January 22, 2008 followed by interment at St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Donations in Dr. Grell's name can be sent to Our Lady of Consolation Nursing Home, 111 Beach Drive, West Islip, New York 11795. According to his wife, many of his mounted fish trophies will be donated to the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County for study.
