W.I. teacher wins National award National Board Certification has been awarded to one teacher in Suffolk County, and she's an instructor at Udall Road Middle School, West Islip. Nicoline Flaiz, a math teacher, built a portfolio that includes student work samples, assignments, videotapes and a thorough analysis of her classroom teaching. Additionally, she was assessed on her knowledge of the subject she teaches. National Board Certification is part of a growing movement that advances education reform. It's a movement that improves teachers, advances student learning, and makes for better schools, the Governor of Georgia is reported to have said as chair of the NBPTS Board of Directors. "National Board Certified Teachers like Nicoline Flaiz are leading the way in preparing America's diverse student population with the skills needed to compete in the 21st century," he added. When asked what prompted her to obtain national certification, Flaiz said she read about it in an educational journal and then learned that the district was offering an incentive. "It seemed like a challenge that I was ready for, since I had just finished completing my Master's course work to reach the MA+75 level," she said. "I like a challenge." As a candidate for National Board Certification, Flaiz not only completed very extensive written and videotaped documentation of classroom instruction but also took a test that covered a demonstration of applied knowledge and some subject specific content. That test was six hours long. Udall Principal Bernadette Burns said Flaiz award is an exemplary achievement. "It does not surprise me that Nicoline has accomplished this," she said. "She brings time, energy, and caring to the adolescent classroom each day. I am pleased that the students at Udall have an opportunity to learn from a teacher who has been judged as one who meets rigorous standards of knowledge and performance." A West Islip teacher since 2002, and a graduate of Dowling College and SUNY Oswego, Flaiz commented that she wasn't expecting so much attention. She added, "It does feel good to know I accomplished something I set out to do."
