SCPD recruits support troops through organization in name of former Village resident Jacob Samuel Fletcher
The program not only helps troops by providing them with basic supplies that many take for granted, but also shows people are thinking of them while they serve the country, said organizers. Dorine Kenney, founder of the Jacob's Light Foundation, named after her son Jacob Samuel Fletcher, who was killed by a road side bomb in Iraq, assisted the recruits in packaging the items on Jan. 31. Kenney says with every box the foundation sends, she's honoring her son's request. "I sent a box to Jacob every week. In one of his letters home, he asked if I could send a buddy of his a box, since he never received anything from home." The Kenney's are former Babylon Village residents. Kenney said she was touched and proud of the work the recruits did for the troops. "I loved them. They were great," she said. "They did an outstanding job in packaging the supplies, were so enthusiastic and their support for the troops showed in their efficiency."
Suffolk Police Veteran's Association donated funds to cover the cost of shipping the packages.
