Local scholarship funds students' dreams
For the past four years, students in the Babylon School District have had the chance to apply for the Mayor E. Donald Conroy Scholarship. The award is presented in June to a Babylon High School senior, or a Babylon Village resident, who is a high school senior, who plans to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited twoor four-year college or university, business school, school of nursing, or technical school.
Recently, Bert Pedersen, chairman of the scholarship committee, and Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino visited the high school to present a commemorative plaque listing the names of the previous scholarship winners. The Class of 2008 winner's name will be inscribed next to Lisa Carroll (Class of 2004), Brandon Hodges (Class of 2005), Christine Johnsen (Class of 2006), and Taylor Reynolds (Class of 2007).
The scholarship is awarded by the Mayor E. Donald Conroy Scholarship Committee based on its review of an outstanding applicant who has made a contribution to Babylon Village through community service. This year, $6,000 will be presented to the winning candidate along with a few discretionary awards to other students. For more information about the scholarship, students should speak with their guidance counselor. Applications are also available on the district's website under the counseling center tab.
