PARP at Bayview Elementary in West Islip

The Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) theme at Bayview Elementary School in West Islip was titled Launch into Reading. Developed by a committee of teachers and parents, the program is in conjunction with the PTA. Recently, teachers Gina Marie Hildebrandt and Nick Greco, shown in photo, dressed as an astronaut and Buzz Lightyear respectively, greeted students as they arrived at school, asking them to read at least 15 minutes a day for two weeks. The teachers proposed that if the youngsters read enough (as demonstrated by stars appearing at the main office and continuing around the entire school), an alien would appear one day to serve them lunch. That "alien" was really Principal Rhonda Pratt, shown in photo. "This innovative program is a wonderful way to enhance the love of reading," says Hildebrandt.
