International journalist and publisher, Joseph Van Denburg

Reporter, editor and publisher Joseph K. Van Denburg Jr., whose career took him all over the world, died Jan. 10, 2008 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was 91 years old.

In Babylon Village, he lived on Sumpwams Place, then Kittiwake Lane. He also lived in Florida, Washington D.C. and London, before retiring to Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania. He then lived in Patchogue for a short time, before moving to Minnesota.

Born in Flushing, Queens he was a graduate of the Columbia School of Journalism. He began his newspaper career as a reporter for the Babylon Leader in 1938 and went on to become a reporter for the Miami Herald, an editor for the Fort Lauderdale Daily News and during World War II worked at the copy desk of theWashington Star. After the war, he became an international correspondent with McGraw-Hill, assigned to India and Brazil. In the 1950s, he was named editor of McGraw-Hill's Aviation Week. In 1969, he became publisher of their International Management in London. By his retirement in 1981, he rose to director of European Publishing with the company.

In Long Island, Mr. Van Denberg was an avid sailboat racer and was a charter member of the Long Island Yacht Club. In England, he took up competitive skeet shooter and fly fisherman. In Pennsylvania he was an active member of the Carlisle Rod & Gun Club and a nationally ranked skeet shooter in his age group.

Mr. Van Denburg leaves behind his sons: Joseph King III of Sayville and Hart Whelan of Minneapolis, Minnesota; his grandchildren: Joseph IV, Christopher, Stephen, Hart (Cory), Annie and Amy; his great grandchildren: Joseph V and Gwendolyn; and his sister, Grace Anderson of Denver, Colorado. He was predeceased by his wife Edythe (Whelan) in 1993.

A private cremation was held. A memorial service will be held on Sat., June 28, 2008 in Fort Edward, New York.
