Babylon student presents original musical

In the photo, under the direction and leadership of senior and studentdirector Patrick Flanagan, approximately 15 student-actors from Babylon Junior-Senior High School took to the stage to perform an original play written by Patrick.
Babylon Junior- Senior High School senior Patrick Flanagan, an active student-actor since the seventh grade, put his musical and theatrical talents to work this summer when he wrote both the music and words for a full-length, 75- page musical, Roses in the Fall, which debuted on the school's stage this January.

The student-written, directed, and acted play worked to illustrate and bring light to issues that young adults are dealing with in a post 9/11 world, in a format that speaks directly to them. Through music and dialogue, the approximate 15-member cast explored and discussed a wide variety of topics, including self-mutilation as a means of dealing with pain, eating disorders, abandonment, relationships, environmental actions, decision making, consequences, and many more.

Flanagan describes the play as rooted in Hamlet, but with a popular culture twist. When creating the play, he states that he hoped the production would, "open the eyes of the audience to the realization that these are not just problems that people deal with globally, they are also affecting individuals as local as Babylon."
