St. Peter's Church improvisation and folk tunes series
A concert given by Viennese concert organist Peter Planyavsky takes place on Sun. Feb. 24, 6 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Bay Shore. The second in a series entitled Masters of Improvisation, Planyavsky will be tested in the art form of improvisation in front of a live audience. With themes provided on the spot, he will improvise in various styles including fugues and American folk tunes.
Planyavsky served over 30 years as organist and director of music at Stephensdom (St. Stephen's Cathedral) in Vienna, Austria. In 1980, he was awarded the prestigious position of organ professor at the Hochschulle fur Musk in Vienna.
The organ at St. Peter's was built by Gress-Miles in 1972 and is a large French style instrument in a reverberant room. St. Peter's is located at 500 South Country Rd., Bay Shore. A suggested donation of $10 for adults or $8 for senior citizens and children will be taken at the door. An Oktoberfest style reception follows.
