Leg. Stern commits to environment protection project
Suffolk County Leg. Steve Stern (D-Huntington) 16th LD is committed to protecting our environment and has joined other legislators going "paperless" by agreeing to accept all legislation electronically. Previously, legislators would receive "The Packet", a paper stack of legislation inches thick, which multiplied by 18 legislators, used an enormous amount of paper each month
"The Clerk's office is not only saving paper and trees," said Presiding Officer William J. Lindsay. "They are saving staff hours as well. There was a lot of effort put into making all of those copies. In the end this is good for the tax-payer because we save money. It will add up over time. It also improves our transparency to the residents. Resolutions, Late Starters, Certificates of Necessity, Veto Override messages are all now posted immediately on our web site."
At the February session alone, 36,199 sheets of paper were saved by the Legislature's commitment to reduce the unnecessary use of paper. "This is an important starting point in our ongoing effort to conserve precious resources and be mindful of what we use and ways we can reduce not only our use of paper, but the energy necessary to manufacture it, package and ship it, copy "The Packet" and dispose of the paper we use," Legislator Stern said. Over the course of the year, we will use millions fewer sheets of paper. It is part of our continuing commitment to the environment and to the taxpayers of Suffolk County."
