Two local men charged with counterfeiting

Suffolk County Police First Squad Detectives have arrested two West Babylon men for counterfeiting U.S. currency and spending the fake money at various businesses throughout the Babylon and Lindenhurst area.

First Squad Detectives were investigating cases of fake $50 and $20 bills being used at three local businesses, when on Jan. 17, 2008, at about 10 p.m, Michael Blasi, age 33, of 621 10th St., West Babylon, attempted to pass a fake twenty dollar bill at the Village Pub located at 174 North Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst. Employees of the pub held Blasi until police arrived and arrested him.

On Jan. 18, at about 7:22 p.m. First Squad Detectives executed a search warrant at 1484 12 St., West Babylon. Computers, scanners and printers used to make the counterfeit currency, along with counterfeit currency of $20 and $50 denominations were seized. John Sheridan, age 43, residing at the above address, was arrested and transported to the First Squad.

Blasi was charged with three counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument 1st degree, a class "C" felony.Sheridan was charged with forgery 1st degree and criminal possession of a forged instrument 1st degree, both class "C" felonies.

Blasi and Sheridan, who were part of the same investigation, are being held at the First Precinct for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Jan. 19, 2008.

Detectives are asking anyone who may be aware of other currency counterfeiting in the area to call the First Squad at 631-854-8152; or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls are confidential.
