An eye on downtown: Lindenhurst Village first in County to install cameras to combat crime and vandalism

S.C. Leg. Wayne Horsley, holds legislative grant check with Lindenhurst Mayor Thomas Brennan at press conference announcing new anti-crime initiative.
Responding to reports of customer intimidation and vandalism along the business district in the Village of Lindenhurst, S.C. Leg. Wayne Horsley (D - Babylon) and Lindenhurst Village Mayor Thomas A. Brennan joined with village merchants and code enforcement officers to tout the effectiveness of recently installed DVRs in the Village of Lindenhurst. The cameras both record and provide live footage of the downtown area- all in an effort to curb the incidents and be the "eyes and ears" of police to bring safety to those who frequent the downtown.

"We want to enhance the health and safety of the community who are lawabiding citizens and want to come and shop in our business district without having to feel intimidated," said Sean Cullinane, the Village Administrator.

"Lindenhurst Village is among Suffolk's finest downtown communities. So naturally it is of the utmost importance to myself, and Mayor Brennan, that every reasonable measure be enacted to ensure the safety of shop patrons, owners, and local residents." Horsley said. "DVRs are a modest, proven, and cost effective measure to enhance public safety."

"The Village of Lindenhurst lays claim to a quintessential downtown, and idyllic suburban neighborhood," said Brennan. "Now, the Village of Lindenhurst can also lay claim to a premier public safety system that is the first of its kind in Suffolk County. Today, we have unveiled phase one of what will be a two-phase DVR public safety initiative, with the help of Legislator Wayne Horsley and Assemblyman Robert K. Sweeney.

Cullinane said that Lindenhurst is not experiencing anything different than what other communities are experiencing, but that officials believe it is important to stop incidents such as vandalism and graffiti.

Horsley secured legislative funding to assist the Village's public safety efforts after a preliminary report by the Legislature's "Safe Communities Initiative" highlighted the effectiveness of minimally invasive DVRs. As a result, Lindenhurst launched a twophase public safety initiative, with the assistance of Horsley and New York State Assemblyman Robert K. Sweeney. The initiative is the first of its kind to receive Suffolk County funding.

"I am delighted to have been able to provide funding for a project that will enhance security and deter graffiti and vandalism in the Village of Lindenhurst," said Sweeney.

The initial grant is for $30,000 and will pay for the purchase of 6 cameras, the software for recording and installation.

In phase one of the project, six Digital Video Re- corders (DVRs) will be installed in the Village business district, and monitor the nearby 9-11 memorial. To date, three DVRs have already been installed to assist Village merchants in deterring graffiti and vandalism in the downtown business district.

In phase two, funding is to be secured by Sweeney in the 2008 budget cycle for three additional DVRs, which will be installed at the Long Island Rail Road Lindenhurst station and Lindenhurst Village Marina. The state-sponsored DVRs will be utilized to enhance public safety in resident and non-residential parking lots adjacent to the LIRR and marina.

Once the DVRs are affixed to a particular building they scan 50-yard sections of their assigned local 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. While the DVRs are capable of live monitoring the village will utilize a 30- day recording cycle and village Officials will review recordings only in the event of a reported incident. DVR recordings will also be made available to the SCPD to assist in official investigations at the request of the primary investigative officer.

"The only people who should have a problem with these cameras are those who are causing damage or acting illegally in our downtown," said Cullinane. "We want to ensure that these incidents do not get out of control."
