Gerald J. Ryan Outreach is one of several charities to be recipient of Annual Charity Golf Outing
Suffolk Regional Off-Track Betting Corporation's employees held their annual Charity Golf Outing on Oct. 23, 2007. This year the outing was held at Bethpage State Park's Blue Course with breakfast and dinner at the Carlyle on the Green. All money raised and expenses were paid for by donations to the golf outing. Two charities were chosen as the recipients of the money raised. The Andrew Lakeman Assistance Fund and the Gerald J. Ryan Outreach Center both received $6,266.
The Andrew Lakeman Assistance Fund was set up with the help of the Backstretch Employees Service Team (B.E.S.T.) located at Belmont Racetrack in Elmont. Lakeman, a 32-year-old-jockey suffered a broken spinal cord in a spill during a May 25, 2007 horse race and is not expected to walk again. The funds raised for the Lakeman Fund will go to offset the costs of Lakeman's care. "Our employees really stepped up to the plate for a member of our horseracing community," Suffolk OTB President Jeff Casale stated. "Mr. Lakeman has taken on some of the best jockeys in the world and beat them and we know he will take on this injury and beat it as well."
The Gerald J. Ryan Outreach Center is located in Wyandanch and assists the community in a variety of issues. This year the money raised for the Ryan Outreach Center came exactly at the right time as it will help offset the cost of providing food to needy families during the holiday season. "What better way to celebrate all that we are thankful for than to allow our neighbors a Thanksgiving Day dinner,". Casale stated. "The Ryan Outreach Center does wonderful work and our donation will help them continue serving the community."
