Babylon Village's Arlene Dunfee at 80

Retired Babylon Public School stenographer and longtime Babylon Village resident Arlene V. Dunfee died Dec. 30, 2007 in Middle Granville, New York. The loving mother, wife and grandmother was 80 years old.

Born July 4, 1927 in Perth Amboy, New Jersey to C. William and Gertrude Messick, she moved to Babylon Vil- lage in 1950 to start her own family. For three years she lived on Pine Street and later in a home they built on Alexander Street until 1980 when she retired with her husband Alfred to Loon's Lake in Chestertown New York and later to Middle Granville, New York.

For 17 years before her retirement in 1976, she was the senior stenographer for the Babylon School District. In recognition of her loyal and lengthy service, July 2, 1976 was officially designated Arlene Dunfee Day in the Town of Babylon.

Mrs. Dunfee enjoyed spending time with her family, skiing, boating and traveling to Europe. After her retirement, she completed more than 80 beautiful needlepoints for her friends and family.

She was a longtime member of Mt. Zion Chapter number 116 Order of the Eastern Star, Civil Service Employee's Association Retiree Chapter 1000 and the American Legion Auxiliary of Chestertown, New York.

She leaves behind her husband of 61 years, Alfred; her daughters: Daryl Hammond of Middle Granville, New York and Kerry Williams of Brunswick, New York; her granddaughters: Rachel and Meredith; and her son in law: David Hammond. She was predeceased by her son, Alfred J. "Buddy," and her parents, C. William and Gertrude Messick.

A Funeral Service was conducted on Jan. 2, 2008 at Sullivan-Minihan & Potter Funeral Home in Queensbury, New York with Rev. Jerry McKinney, pastor of the Middle Granville Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment followed in Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, New York.
