Arthur Kroecker, beloved Babylon-area volunteer
"He was a blessing to all that knew him," said his wife of 60 years Mildred (nee Driscoll). "His gift was vision and craftsmanship, which could be seen in everything he did." For many years, Mr. Kroecker took care of the property of the First Presbyterian Church of Babylon's and was a gifted woodworker who made handcrafted things for the church. Born in Woodhaven, New York, he lived in West Babylon for more than 60 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a crane operator with the 488th Port Battalion based in both North Africa and Italy, and was awarded a Purple Heart, among other citations. A builder by trade, he was a member of Local 138, the International Union of Operating Engineers as a Operating engineer. According to his family, he built many buildings around the tri-state area. Mr. Kroecker loved to sail on the Great South Bay, using his church's steeple as a guide home, and flying his own plane. A recipient himself, he delivered more than 150 corneas to airports for distribution around the country as a dedicated member of the Babylon Lion's Club. A Funeral Service was held Dec. 30, 2007 at the First Presbyterian Church of Babylon. A private cremation was followed by interment in Long Island National Cemetery at Pinelawn. He also leaves leaves behind his children: Pamela Shaw and Diane Calise and her husband Joseph; his grandchildren: Andrea and Thomas Hocker and Megan and Michael Tardio; his great grandchildren: Sarah, James, Brian and Grace Hocker and Michael, Vivien and Madelin Tardio; and his brother, Richard of Tucson, Arizona. He was predeceased by his brother, Frederick.
Donations in Mr. Kroecker's name can be sent to Christa House, 720 Albin Avenue, West Babylon, New York 11704.
