National Organization for Women video and discussion
On Tues., Feb. 5, 7 p.m. at the West Islip Public Library, 3 Higbie Ln., Room B, the South Suffolk Chapter of the National organization for Women will present a Black History Month program, Two Dollars and a Dream, a video account of the first selfmade millionairess, Madame C.J. Walker, a child of slaves freed by the Civil War. She, with the help of her daughter, made her fortune on skin and hair products. Her daughter became a patron of the Harlem Renaissance.
Discussion following video will be led by Alicia Figueras, vice president of the Islip Town Branch NAACP and business development manager for the Hauppauge Industrial Association (HIA), and by Carol Gordon, third vice president of the Central L.I. Branch NAACP and president of Unspoken History Treasures, which teaches American history using historical artifacts. Resources for aspiring entrepreneurs will be offered.
