Bay Shore teacher receives NYS grant award

On November 15, 2007, Bay Shore High School English teacher Amy Jo Southworth received a New York State English Council Grant Award at the awards tea in Manhattan. Southworth's program, Curiosity Kits: Using Text Sets to Support all Readers was selected from several high quality applications as the one most worthy of funding. The minigrant program is intended to support promising programs and activities related to English.

The students will participate in curiosity kits that contain several genres of literature focused around a topical theme emerging from interdisciplinary curricula.

The following day, Southworth was awarded the Suffolk County Library Association's academic scholarship for graduate work in the field of Library Science. The association offers scholarship money to assist an outstand- ing library school student in subsidizing the cost of his/her education, and to promote the profession by supporting an excellent student pursuing a master's degree in the field.
