Babylon Village Arts Council presents Poetry in the Village Series On Feb. 10, the Babylon Village Arts Council will present its Poetry in the Village Series featuring George Wallace , Michelle Whittaker and Tony Policano at the Babylon Public LIbrary 24 South Carll Ave., Babylon Village. The readings will begin at 2 p.m. in the community room and there will be an open mic session. The event is free and open to the public. Wallace is editor of Poetrybay and Long Island Quarterly, author of sixteen chapbooks and two CDs of poetry, and a practitioner of a style of "surreal bop prosody poetry" that he has performed across the United States and in Europe. In 2003, he was named the first poet laureate for Suffolk County. Whittaker is a graduate of SUNY Fredonia and co-founder of the Northport Opera Company. Her poetry, she says, is "old school," listing Octavio Paz, Pablo Neruda, Ai, Lucille Clifton, Mary Oliver and Sharon Olds as influences. Policano is a poet from Oyster Bay who writes poetry, in his words, that is "spoken out loud or hot off the page." He adds, "I write poetry to free the dove in the hat of springtime...to get away with something no one could care less about, to begin to hear myself again loud and clear, to start caring less about the things that matter less...(and) to meet friends who also believe in the sacredness of everything." On Feb. 14, the Babylon Village Arts Council will present its Second Thursday Concert series featuring Twilight Hotel at Astoria Federal Savings Bank located at 180 W. Main St., Babylon Village. Canadian musicians Dave Quanbury and Brandy Zdan mix their unique cabaret/folk/rockabilly music with sizzling chemistry for a not- to-be missed performance. The music begins at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
