Travelers' Club presents family life in China

The January meeting of the Travelers' Club was held at the home of Kerry Riddle. Margaret Weiman presented the evening's paper on family life in China.

The family is a priority for the Chinese. Grandparents, parents and children often share a home. Younger people will look after older family members. Respect for older people is one of the principles of the Chinese philosophy called Confucianism. Today family life is changing because of the one-child rule to contain the population growth, but it is not on the decline. The bond between parents and children remains very strong.

Music and drama gave a presentation on the practice of foot binding. At age six the foot binding of girls began. It was a very painful process with breakage of bones. The end result was a foot that was three inches long, considered to be very desirable to men, but render woman unable to walk. The practice was finally ended in 1949 when the Chinese Communists took over the country.
