Learning is in full bloom at May Moore Elementary

Future botanists nurtured their skills during the Deer Park's May Moore Elementary School Friends in the Garden project. Originating in 2001 in memory of much-loved teacher and colleague Kathryn Densing, the garden continues to grow each year! Under the direction of Learning Lab teacher and avid gardener Beth Rose the students, teachers and parents undertook this school-wide beautification project.

In conjunction with the PTA and BOCES Arts in Education, the students worked alongside artist and educator John DiNaro. DiNaro combines art and nature in his instruction to students and believes that, "There is an artist in all of us." His work is also on display in the May Moore cafeteria, where, over the last three years, he has taught painting techniques to students. The result is a large mural on display, depicting the seasons.

Students were responsible for weeding, as well as planting mums, bulbs, cabbage, and small shrubs in the May Moore garden, which has received tremendous support from many helpful parents who donated items to be planted, work gloves, and the extra helping hands. Future garden project ideas include a fishpond and a fountain. Anyone wishing to donate or lend a hand in the garden can contact Mrs. Rose at 631-274-4460.
