Editorial It's not too often that stories about young people are featured on the front page of a newspaper, and when they are, the story usually recounts some ill deed or illegal act they have committed. Not so this week in the Beacon. Our front page story is about two young men who, at grave risk to themselves, helped save the life of a man who was drowning following a boating accident in June, 2006. These youths, Michael Hakans and Conor Fitzgerald, were recently recognized by the Village Board for their actions, and rightfully so. As people stood on the shoreline and saw the accident and the victim floundering in the water, Hakans and Fitzgerald decided they could not stand by. They jumped in the water and swam out to the victim as a wayward boat circled dangerously nearby. They pulled the man to safety.
Hakans and Fitzgerald were committed, conscientious young men even before this incident. They were working as lifeguards, doing well in school and getting ready to head off to college. One is an Eagle Scout. What the incident on June 6, 2006 showed is that there is a lot more to them, however, and we applaud them for showing such courage and character.
