Jack Gallo, West Islip resident and former Brentwood teacher Big hearted Jack Gallo will be remembered as always helping others. The longtime West Islip resident died December 29, 2007 at the age of 74. As a teacher, he worked miracles with troubled students and as a volunteer he helped needy families. Born and raised on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, he moved to West Islip from Brooklyn in 1959. He lived in West Islip for 48 years. For two years he taught in Brentwood before becoming an industrial arts teacher in the Plainedge School District. For more than 30 years he worked as a shop teacher in the junior high until his retirement when he was 55. "He just worked wonders with kids that other teachers couldn't handle. It was amazing, the kids just loved him," said his wife of 51 years, Lorie. For several years he served on the board of directors of the Family Service League of Suffolk County, a counseling agency for troubled families, and was a member of the West Islip Beautification Society and a board member of the Tri-County Teacher's Retirement Counsel. Mr. Gallo also leaves behind his children and their spouses: Marian Eckel, Steven and Mady and Glen and Debra; his grandchildren: Nicole, Michael, Breanna, Emily and Jared; his sisters and brothers-in-law: Enzo and Linda Mammone and Marilyn; and his brother, Frank. He was predeceased by his daughter, Jayne.
He reposed at the Lang-Tobia- DiPalma Funeral Home in Babylon Village on Jan. 3, 2008. A Funeral was held at the funeral home on Jan. 4, 2008 followed by interment in Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn.
