Babylon Village volunteer awards committee set to work

The Babylon Village Awards Committee has been meeting to come up with ways of increasing the involvement of Village residents in the selection process of annual award winners. The committee is composed of past winners. Several of the past winners are deceased. They are Stewart Aldrich, John Rinklin and Rogers Howell.

Currently serving are Betty Siegel, chairperson; Isabel Gallagher; Lynn Rohl; Joy Torrey; Aaron Stein; Charles Spencer; Gene Turner; Alice Zaruka; Joan and William Holmes and Mary Ellen Sullivan.

Bob Pasch is not only a past winner and has been serving on the committee, but he also has been chairman of the group since its inception about 12 years ago. He is now the honorary chairman. Mayor Ralph Scordino is a member ex-officio.

The process the committee has adopted is one which will give all Village residents a chance to nominate a Babylon Village resident for the award. The current committee members will be contacting residents and providing them with forms for completing applications for consideration. They will meet representatives at various local organization meetings. You do not need to be a member of an organization to be considered for the award.

Forms will be available at the Babylon Village office and through the Beacon. You may duplicate these forms in as many copies as you need.

The deadline for filing an application is May 1, 2008. Applications are to be sent directly to B.J. Siegel at 161 Cedar Ln, Babylon, NY 11702. At your request, the committee will interview nominators and/or candidates.

The goal is to honor Babylon Village residents who have acted voluntarily to enhance Babylon Village. Only one award is given in a calendar year, but no one will ever be rejected because the candidates' records of service will be saved from year to year and will be available for updating and annual consideration.
