Babylon Village Arts Council sponsors events

Babylon Village Arts Council is planning many events throughout the upcoming New Year. The 2nd Thursday Concert Series will be held the second Thursday of the month at Astoria Federal Savings and each Poetry series is building support among the poets and will be held each month.

•In December BVAC sponsored the beautiful music at the Christmas at the Conklin House with Annie Mark, harpist. Shenole Latimer entertained about 25 BVAC supporters on Dec. 11. BVAC's first "Poets on the Village" on Dec. 13 was well attended and the puppet show at the Historical Society building was standing room only.

•January is BVAC's young musician month. This year BVAC is sponsoring Babylon High School's Jazz Band under the direction of Mr. Charles Leech and Express, vocal Jazz group, under the direction of Mr. Kroll as part of the 2nd Thursday Concert Series on Jan. 10. The concert will begin at 7:30 at Astoria Federal Savings Savings Bank, located at 180 W. Main Street.

•The Babylon Village Arts Council presents its "Poetry in the Village Series" on Sunday, Jan. 13 from 2 - 4 p.m. at the Babylon Public Library located at 24 South Carll Avenue, Babylon Village. There will be an open mic.

Barbara Reiher-Meyers is a Long Island, New York poet, board member of the Long Island Poetry Collective. Barbara also curates a poetry calendar for www.poetz.com/longisland, has coordinated events for the Northport Arts Coalition and Smithtown Township Arts Council, among others. Her poetry has been published in print journals and on line. Barbara facilitates monthly workshops in Ronkonkoma, sends weekly emails of local poetry events, and has edited several volumes of poetry . Sounds Familiar is the title of her first book of poems.

Beverly E. Kotch is the director of program development for the Long Island Writers' Guild. She is a member of the Farmingdale Poetry Group, the Long Island Poetry Collective, Poets in Nassau, the Live Poets Society, Performance Poets Association and the North Sea Poetry Scene. An award-winning poet, she served on the committee to establish the post of Poet Laureate in Nassau County.
