College night provides great insight into application process

More than 200 parents and students filled the auditorium seats at Babylon Junior-Senior High School recently to learn how to successfully make it through the lengthy and often cumbersome process of applying to colleges. The program, which has been conducted for the past two years, was open to all of the school's students, but predominantly attended by the building's juniors and seniors.

Unlike a traditional college fair night where attendees would have the chance to visit booths to gather information on different schools, Babylon's college night enabled the audience to get tips on submitting the most desirable application from some leading professionals. Representatives from Yale, Grinnell, Stony Brook, the University of Vermont, Gettysburg, Cortland, and Sacred Heart made up a panel of experts that analyzed a number of mock applications made by the high school's guidance department, and provided feedback on the documents positive and negative aspects.

During the program the panel members spoke about the importance of test scores, essays, letters of recommendation, and how being a well-versed student is best.
