Hassell's Auto Body owner, Doug Hassell

Longtime West Islip resident Douglas G. Hassell, Sr., who was the founder and owner of Hassell Auto Body in West Babylon, died suddenly Nov. 30, 2007. He was 68 years old.

Born in Richmond Hill, Queens he served in the U.S. Army with the military police. He spent many years in Lynbrook before relocating to West Islip.

He retired from the Fire Department of New York City in 1987 after 20 years with Engine 58 in Harlem and Engine 270 in Richmond Hill and worked full time at his auto center.

According to his family, he was very active in charitable causes and held many car washes to raise money for the Girl and Boy Scouts.

He leaves behind his wife, Ann; his children: Douglas G., Jr. of West Islip and his wife Catherine and Kelly Wood of West Islip and her husband Robert; his grandchildren that called him "Pop Pop:" Randy, James, Devon, Matthew, Finn, Katie and Douglas III; and his sisters, Eleanor Jacob and Florence Singer. He was predeceased by his daughter, Kimberly Ann Hassell- Bazoge, and his granddaughter, Kaleigh.

Mr. Hassell reposed at the Claude R. Boyd- Spencer Funeral Home, Babylon Village, on December 3 and 4, 2007. A Funeral Mass was held December 12, 2007 at St. Joseph's R.C. Church, Babylon. Entombment to follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park.
