Legislator Stern announces Real Property Tax Exemption for Cold War veterans

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern (DHuntington) 16th LD, Chairman of the Veterans and Seniors Committee, announced that the Suffolk County Legislature has approved his legislation qualifying Cold War veterans for a Real Property Tax exemption. A Cold War Veteran is any person who served on active duty for a period of more than 365 days in the United States Armed Forces, during the period of time between September 2, 1945 through December 26, 1991 and has received an Honorable Discharge. The exemption also applies to the spouse or unremarried surviving spouse of a Cold War Veteran.

"This bill will provide tax relief to those veterans who served our nation during the Cold War period and whose service safeguarded our nation from the threat of nuclear war and Communism, " Legislator Stern said. "I encourage all those eligible to take advantage of this tax exemption to help reduce property tax burdens."
