Commissioner Bill Crothers Commissioner Bill Crothers On Dec. 9, voters in the Copiague Fire District will head to the polls to elect a fire commissioner. Running unopposed for a five-year term is Bill Crothers.

The Copiague Fire Department has a paid EMS unit from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday with volunteers on hand to supplement the work both during the week and on weekends. The department responds to more than 2,000 calls a year and operates with an annual budget of approximately $2.9 million. Next year's budget is $3.1 million. The department serves approximately 23,000 residents.

Fire District commissioners are volunteers who receive no financial compensation for their service. They are responsible for setting policy, drawing up and maintaining the district budget, purchasing equipment and establishing training programs for the volunteers.

The voting is at fire headquarters, 320 Great Neck Rd., 6 to 9 p.m.
