N.Y.S. Assemblyman Andrew Raia and Sen. Owen Johnson recently attended a Deer Park Board of Education meeting to acknowledge the Deer Park School District and Board of Education for their service to children and the programs they provide.

In particular, Assemblyman Raia recognized the district and students at John F. Kennedy Intermediate, John Quincy Adams and May Moore Elementary Schools for their participation and excellence demonstrated in the There Ought to Be a Law poster contest. Students from all three schools received awards for their winning posters in this contest, sponsored by Assemblyman Raia. Through these creative posters, students proposed laws, some of which will actually be brought before the New York State Legislature in Albany for discussion. Students learned how to draft a bill and how a bill becomes a law and were inspired by the idea that they can positively affect all New Yorkers.

In concert with this acknowledgement, both Assemblyman Raia and Sen. Johnson thanked the Deer Park Board of Education for its dedication and volunteer service to the Deer Park School District children, and overall community.

New York State declares one week every October Board of Education Recognition Week to honor Board members, across the state. Board of Education members, who are elected by the community's residents, volunteer many hours per month overseeing the operation and management of their school district without monetary compensation. This includes hiring the Superintendent of Schools and writing policies.
