The Constitution's True Meaning: Babylon AP students attend Constitution Day Event at Hofstra
On Constitution Day 2008 (September 17th), a select group of students from Christopher Ryan's Advanced Placement Government class in the Babylon School District attended a special presentation at Hofstra University. The event, which was themed Original Intent and the United States Constitution, was conducted by Alan Singer, Ph.D., professor of secondary education and director of social studies education for Hofstra.
"This trip provided my students with great learning experience about the Constitution, and one professor's view of how it's being misinterpreted," stated Ryan.
Throughout the presentation, Dr. Singer discussed more than 20 different conflicting viewpoints on original intent, quoting leading statesmen and Supreme Court Justices of past and present fame, offering thought-provoking insights on each, and welcoming discourse with all of the students in attendance at Monroe Lecture Hall.
Dr. Singer is well-known for his provocative approach to teaching American History. "I knew that Alan would push the envelope on this topic," said Dr. Malaszczyk, Director of the Social Studies Department at Babylon High School. "He forces his students to think critically at every moment in a class meeting... there is no time for daydreaming in an Alan Singer lecture. I am thrilled that Mr. Ryan chose to expose his AP class to this experience." Elizabeth Quinn, a Babylon social studies teacher who also attended the event, agreed, stating that this was "a fascinating, partisan view of an interpretation of the Constitution."
