The film Hoosiers has become a cliché of sorts for coaches using movies as motivational tools. Bottom line, however, is that they work to at least send message and make some examples.

"With Hoosiers you have a high school team and they were playing a team that was far superior to them," said North Babylon boys varsity soccer coach Mike Cashmen, who coached his boys into a similar situation.

Like Gene Hackman's Indiana high school hoop's team that ravaged through a tough state bracket to win a championship, Cashmen's Bulldog squad had overcome tough odds of not playing in a Suffolk County title game for 19 years. Cashmen had the added juice of playing one of the best teams on the East Coast in Brentwood, who also beat them almost two decades earlier.

It was no different this time as Brentwood won, 2-1. The Bulldogs fought though. Just like they did all year. Just like Cashmen had hoped for.

"We knew who [Brentwood] was," Cashmen said. "We tried not to over emphasize that to the boys."

Brentwood's Hancell Guevara opened the scoring on a chance that Cashmen said was mediocre compared to most of the others the Indians had in the first half. "They had a half dozen opportunities to create better scoring chance," he said.

Five minutes later at the 20-minute mark, Antonio Crespi scored for the Bulldogs, who controlled possession and tempo for much of the remainder of the game.

Norvin Acosta scored after Brentwood won the ball on a goal kick with 5:04 remaining in the contest and North Babylon couldn't recover after that.

Prior to the Suffolk title game, the Bulldogs beat Centereach 2-1, Half Hollow Hills West 1-0 and Smithtown West 3-0 in an impressive defensive string of playoff wins.

Brentwood went on to face Massapequa in the Class AA Long Island championship with Massapequa capturing the title.
