Operation Sweet Tooth
Shown in the photo, Babylon Memorial Grade School fourth grader Alexandra Singleton proudly displays some of the candy that was donated as part of her schoolwide initiative - Operation Sweet With a desire to bring a bit of Halloween spirit to the U.S. soldiers serving the country overseas and in a true demonstration of character, Babylon Memorial Grade School fourth grader Alexandra Singleton rallied her peers together to participate in a community service project she called Operation Sweet Tooth. The project, which aimed at turning the traditional dress-up holiday into an opportunity for giving, encouraged the school's students and staff members to donate their "extra" Halloween candy to overseas soldiers.
"With all of the talk about the war in Iraq during the election process, I knew that I wanted to do something to help the soldiers serving our country," stated Alexandra. "While donating our extra candy might seem like a small thing, I am sure it will mean a lot to the soldiers who are away from their families this year and protecting us. I am really excited to see how many people participated…it's a great project that I would like to continue in the future."
Alexandra, with the help of her mother, created posters and flyers announcing the project and collection boxes for each classroom. Also, teachers were encouraged to explain why the candy donations could mean so much to the soldiers overseas and speak about the good feelings that come from giving to others. The school collected hundreds of pounds of candy as part of this project.
