State lawmakers have some heavy lifting to do
      New York State lawmakers are meeting this week at the request of Gov. David Paterson who has asked that they cut $2 billion from the state budget this year. Unless they do that, cautions the governor, New York State will be facing a serious financial crisis next year and be unable to balance its budget.

Government bailouts violate the American philosophy of capitalism
      Dear Editor, Most Americans are puzzled about the trillion dollar bailout of major banks, and the uncertainty that is looming in the future as a result. This debt created by greed and corruption, will be inevitably borne on the backs of responsible Americans who live within their means and budget according to their income.

State cutbacks in health care will put stress on hospitals
      Dear Editor: The Governor is calling for reductions in Medicaid spending just at a time when thousands of Long Islanders are losing their jobs and the health insurance provided by those jobs. No one disputes the severity of the current economic crisis.
