Mary Howell, lifelong Babylon Village resident and volunteer

Lifelong Babylon Village resident Mary G. Howell, who loved her her community, died Sept. 22, 2008. She was 91-years old and was a devoted homemaker and area volunteer. Born on Colt Avenue in Babylon Village, she lived on Bulger Street for many years. After she married Rogers Howell,

who served in World War II, she lived for some time in Washington D.C. and worked as a secretary in the Pentagon. They lived in Bermuda for some time before returning to live on Little East Neck Road while building their own home on Dorset Lane. She lived there for more than 50 years.

Mrs. Howell was a dedicated volunteer at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, Babylon's Nathaniel Conklin House, the Babylon Village Historical Society and the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society. She also loved to golf and bowl.

"She was a wonderful, caring resident of the Village, said Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino who said he knew her since he worked as a lifeguard at the Babylon Yacht Club. "Its a tremendous loss for our community."

She leaves behind 24 nieces and nephews, and her sister Eileen Clancy. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Rogers, who died in June 2001.

She reposed at the Fredrick J. Chapey and Sons Funeral Home, West Islip, Sept. 26, 2008. A Memorial Mass was said on Sept. 27, 2008 at St. Joseph's R.C. Church in Babylon, followed by a private cremation and interment at Babylon Cemetery in Babylon Village.
